Planning cabinets for multifamily projects

On an apartment or condo job, cabinets are one of the last trades in and one of the first things the owner notices. Planning them at the start keeps the schedule, the storage room and the punch list under control.

Start with unit types, not units

A building with 120 apartments might only have six cabinet layouts. Plan by unit type: one set of elevations for each type, the count of each, and any mirrored (left-hand and right-hand) versions. That is how the quote should be built and how the order should be checked.

Then look for near-duplicates. Where two unit types differ by one cabinet, it is often worth making them the same. Every cabinet we build is made to size, so the exceptions can still be built exactly, but each exception is another line to check, label and install correctly.

Keep finishes consistent across rooms too. Kitchens, bathroom vanities, laundry and closet cabinets can use the same doors, so one finish carries through each apartment, and ordering them on one project keeps the schedule and the delivery together.

Sizes come from the drawings

We quote from the drawings you send and build every cabinet to the dimensions on the confirmed order. On a multifamily job that means the field dimensions belong to the project team: confirm them against the latest architectural set, and again once walls are framed and before the order is released, especially for the first unit of each type.

A few habits save trouble:

  • Mark windows, doors, soffits, plumbing, outlets and appliance locations on each unit elevation.
  • Check appliance sizes against the cabinets beside or around them, using the appliance specification sheets.
  • Plan fillers at walls and corners so doors and drawers open past trim and handles.
  • Re-check the unit types against the latest drawings before the order is placed. Quoting from early drawings and building from late ones is the most common multifamily mistake.

Our standard kitchen cabinets run 9"–36" wide in 3" steps, with 34 1/2" high bases and 84"–96" tall pantries, and any width, height or depth can be changed per cabinet. See our standard frameless cabinet sizes guide for the full range.

Phase the deliveries to the build

Multi-unit projects get phased delivery: deliveries are scheduled to follow the build sequence, so the site is not storing a whole building's cabinets while drywall and floors are still going in. Tell us how the building will be released (by floor, by building or by phase) when you confirm the order.

Each unit's cabinets are packed together, so a crew can unload and install one apartment at a time instead of sorting a truck.

Most orders are made in 5–7 business days once the deposit or payment is confirmed. Check the estimated ship date on each order when you set the phase dates.

We deliver within 100 miles of Vineland, NJ, straight to the jobsite (farther away, contact us), or you can pick up at our Vineland factory.

Receiving, storage and installation

  • Check every delivery against the packing slip: cabinets, doors, panels, fillers, toe kicks and hardware.
  • Report damage or shortages within 48 hours, with a photo, through the order in the dealer portal, so the part can be sent.
  • Store cabinets indoors, flat, dry and covered, away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep the space between 50 and 85°F and 30 to 55% relative humidity, and let cabinets sit 24 hours in the room before installing.

Cabinets arrive fully assembled with a full 3/4" (18 mm) back that screws straight to the wall studs, with no hanging rail, which keeps installation fast and repeatable from unit to unit.

Know which warranty applies

Cabinets and vanities installed in rental units, or bought by landlords, leasing companies or other commercial purchasers, carry our 12-month commercial warranty against defects in material and workmanship. Homes built or remodeled for owner-occupants are covered by the residential terms on our warranty page. Neither warranty covers labor for removal or reinstallation, shipping, or damage from improper storage, installation or extreme temperature and humidity.

Write the warranty that applies into your contract and pass it on to the owner at handover, so everyone knows which terms the building carries.

A short checklist before you sign:

  • Unit types and counts confirmed against the latest drawings.
  • Field dimensions confirmed by the project team.
  • Door finish approved by the owner on a physical sample.
  • Delivery phases and dates agreed, with a site contact for each delivery.
  • Dry, climate-controlled storage on site.
  • The commercial or residential warranty written into the contract.
